The Spanish Civil War in Barcelona: Hopes and Fears in the Rearguard

The Spanish Civil War is one of the defining moments in Barcelona’s long history. With this comprehensive and well-documented itinerary we will approach one the most moving episodes of Spain’s recent history in a sensitive and respectful manner. Following the footsteps of George Orwell during his stay in Barcelona, we will visit the historical places that allow us to follow the traces of a devastating collective tragedy.

We will try to evoke the daily life of local citizens during and after the war and we’ll learn about the terrible bombings they suffered. The people of Barcelona were the target of one of the first-ever examples of massive, strategic aerial civilian bombings in World-history. To decisively trace these tragic events, we’ll visit the subterranean galleries of an impressive air-raid shelter, and we will consider the hopes and fears, of those facing the growing empowerment of fascism in Europe.
