Homage to Barcelona: The Spanish Civil War in our City
Following the footsteps of George Orwell during his stay in Barcelona, we will visit the places in the city that explain the history of the civil war. This was a moment in Spanish history that has impacted society today and continues to be a cultural reminder today. Many families and friends of the victims of this war are still affected today by their loss. From the burning of the convents to the “Fets de maig” (Acts of May), we will critically and respectfully approach and analyze one of the most moving episodes of our recent history. We will review the daily life of citizens before the war and learn about the main focus of the bombings. We will travel through el Paralelo, explaining the two most emblematic nights of the republican decades and then finish our route visiting the air-raid shelter of Poble Sec, one of the most striking pieces of evidence of neighborhood solidarity and of the passive defense of Barcelona in front of barbarism. We will get to walk through this shelter and feel for the the type of living conditions people underwent during these hard times.
