A Taste of the Past: Barcelona in Gothic Times

Surely we have all been around Barcelona’s gothic quarter at least once, and surely we have been told her story as a stage for political intrigue, economic development and chivalry. But the gothic quarter has another story; the story of the everyday life of its people who appear in dusty documents and archives that rarely come to light. These people are the part of Barcelona that interests us most. The trials, trade, production and craftsmanship; the life of the marginalized, that of the women, the piety and devotion, and the anecdotes of these characters and concepts illustrate the history of Barcelona from a different point of view.

Itinera Plus proposes to discover the other face of Barcelona’s past, the story that lives behind the closed doors of its citizen’s homes. A walk through the Ciutat Vella (the old city) will allow us to discover one of the most impressive times in Barcelona’s history. We will see the city that built a second wall to protect the new suburbs constructed next to the actual Santa Maria del Mar, the convent of Framenors, the monastery of Sant Pere de las Puelles, where there were more active “vilas noves” than the Mercadal, and the irrigation port, Comtal.
