Shalom Barcelona: Tour around Barcelona Jewish Quarter

Barcelona was home to one of the most important Jewish communities of the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages where philosophy, science, arts and Kabbalah flourished. Prominent figures such as Raymundus Lullius, Bernat Metge or Benjamín de Tudela, among others, visited Barcelona’s Jewish quarter, here known as El Call, and affirmed its importance. Today, the city still has one of the most important Jewish communities in Spain. Our tour will allow us to discover the traces of the Jewish culture in Barcelona and what daily life was like in the old Medieval Jewry.

The remainders of the Synagogue, the public and the ritual baths (miqwé), the charities and the boundaries that surrounded the neighborhood are some of the main highlights scheduled for this route. We will learn about the lives of some of the most illustrious characters in the Jewish community, the political and administrative organization under the royal patronage, and the everyday habits and customs of the citizens. We will also try to understand what it was like for the citizens to see the destruction of their houses and to be violently expelled from their homes.
