La Catedral del Mar: the Mysteries of Medieval Barcelona

Itinera Plus has created the official route for the best-selling book La Catedral del Mar, by Ildefonso Falcones. The novel is a fantastic recreation of the middle ages in Barcelona. La Catedral del Mar is a literary tour about the mysteries of medieval Barcelona. Beyond the fast-paced action of the book, a large part of the tour will cover different aspects of history, urban form, society and everyday life in the city. The literary universe created by Ildefonso Falcones allows us to travel back in time to Barcelona in the 14th century and see the city as it was - open to the Mediterranean, rich and prosperous, a market of markets and full of opportunities.

Having read the book is not at all necessary to enjoy this tour. Through this historical route, we will cover politics and the role and responsibility of the Consejo de Ciento (Council of One Hundred) to the government. We will also discuss the conflicts and social roles, such as riots and court intrigues, faced by the characters in the novel that form the citizenship of the 14th century. A moment of brilliance came in the 14th century with the birth of Catalan gothic. It was an unprecedented artistic style that affected the development of Barcelona’s religious and civil architecture by showing the economic importance of the city and its Mediterranean projection. Past religion, traditions, clichés, customs and food give us the opportunity to reconnect with the similarities and differences between us and our ancestors from gothic times, a tour that you cannot miss.
